Book Review: I don't wear Sunscreen by Kavipriya Moorthy

Good day People,
Kavipriya's debut novel I dont wear Sunscreen has been showcased on this blog Book Blitz: I don't wear Sunscreen by Kavipriya Moorthy.

The Blurb and the Title of the book caught my attention. So when the Author announced a Free Kindle Download, I got it immediately. Its hardly 100+ pages book. I read it in 2 night reading sessions.  Listen to the Song: Everybody's free to wear Sunscreen.

Story:
Laksha and Pallavi are BFF, like till death do us apart and know each other more than their birth parents. Laksha is from a middle class family but well-to-do. On the other hand Pallavi's family is struggling with debts and Pallavi has taken it upon herself to get the family out of this decade long crisis. So even though by nature they are poles apart they are like conjoined twins. Laksha decides to take up Interior designing in Mumbai. Pallavi settles for an engineering college in sleepy Coimbatore. Laksha enjoys life, studies and career. Pallavi, submerges herself in studies, tests, part time jobs, placements in the hope of landing a job in a Big IT company. Laksha lands a job through Sai who is starting to become more than a friend and she drifts away from Pallavi. Pallavi goes desperate as she doesnt land a job in the college placements.
For Laksha, a torturous train journey turns her into a neurotic. She loses herself, her job, cant trust her heart & love,...  Pallavi suddenly goes incognito from her life.
How does she revamp herself and her life?

What I liked:
The story has mystery, friendship, love, motivational theme,...
Characters and location description. Loved the way Laksha's mom's past and her current nature have been shown. Lots of layers there. Her Father, Sai, Pallavi,...
Good study of Interior designing concepts and also the scattering of Engineering terms.
The messages exchanged and the naughty banter between Sai & Laksha, or Pallavi and Laksha or Laksha and her mom.

What I wanted more:
If I had a red pen and a hard-copy of the book, Kavipriya, you would rewrite the book for grammatical errors and sentence formation :) ;)
The reason for treachery seemed a bit far fetched.
The climax just came crashing in. Still trying to figure out who did what and why. A couple of pages to explain that would have been beneficial to the reader.
The mention or reason for the Title of the book seemed forced. It could have been highlighted in the early chapters, just a suggestion.

Book Review: Hell to Pay by Pamela Fagan Hutchins

Good day people !
Rise & Shine ;) coz there is Hell to Pay to live this Life :D

I completed reading #HTP 3 days ago & the story still keeps running in my head. It has crime, mystery, thrilling plots, horse riding + rodeo scenes, religion(extremist), love, court rooms, animals, sports, ... lot of things going on in this one book. So I loved it very much. Its a seventh book in the series.
Check out the story blurb at: Spotlight: Hell to Pay by Pamela Fagan Hutchins

Story:
Emily is a paralegal(not a lawyer but trained in legal matters, in layman terms) and employed with Jack who is a lawyer. They both are engaged, make a good couple, have a great time in the sack, love horses and dogs, want to fight for victims whose case no one wants to touch. Emily has lost a baby in her previous marriage and wants to adopt a girl named Betsy but the foster parents from an extremist christian church are creating opposition. Jack was married with two kids who died in a car blast that was meant for him, so carries that emotional baggage while the culprit is still at large. He hasn't confessed his love to Emily in words yet and she wants a guy who loves and wants her, so she keeps avoiding setting a date for their marriage. Their friend Nadine is getting married to Phil who has opened an adult novelty store which is again the cause of ire for the extremist church. Emily's father is back from ten years of prison but she finds it difficult to bond with him with his criminal history always taking precedence in her mind. Phil's best friend Dennis gets murdered on the night of the party celebrating Phil's store opening and engagement. The police find Phil guilty and the opposition has an easy case with Phil's recent burglary sentence. Emily loses the chance to adopt Betsy due to her foster parents. Jack is acting uncommunicative, being secretive, lying to her. Phil goes into diabetic coma during the trial making Nadine and her boys loose their chance at happiness. Now Emily has to get to the bottom of the murder of Dennis to prove Phil innocent and help her best friend Nadine. Will she succeed? What about her own happiness?

What I liked:
The story at the beginning is confusing with too many characters coming from all the 6 books in this series and little aversive with the description of adult cakes + sex toys + murders + swingers + extremist church and their doings. But after a few chapter you are hooked and cheering for Emily and Jack.

The language is good. The plot captivating. Story flow smooth. The situations and locations well described that will make you feel you are watching an old cowboy movie.

Like I said in the intro there are too many things happening in the story. So it never gets dull and most of these things are informative too.

The action scenes bring you on the edge of your seats. With Emily there is always action :D from stinking cars to rattle snake capturing to going undercover as a devout christian girl in need of the Lords assistance.

The mushy and emotional scenes pull at your heart. Be it Emily having the worst day. Losing chance at adopting Betsy. Nadine and Emily's friendship. Clyde's life and his son. Rapport of Emily and Wallace. Jack's notes and wedding gifts. Emily and her dad's talks, Melinda and her pure jealousy for Emily,....

The numerous characters are well etched out. You will visualize a Phil and a Wallace immediately to Clyde and Emily's mom. Jack as the Perfect Guy who goes mum when he needs to put in words his love, in short a Basic male :D

I loved the names Emily has been given and are spot on for her impulsive behavior and her braces. Calamity Jane, Rodeo Queen, Seabiscuit,

Also the phrases Emily uses for cuss words Son of a biscuit... Mother of pearl... Spit in well bucket... I was going ROFL with these :D :)

I loved the horse & riding descriptions, made me remember the dozens of cowboy novels I read in teenage from our colony library. Also the recently read Black Beauty.

What I wanted more:
Closure for Betsy's foster parent's opposition and the church. The ending seemed rushed up.

End to the mission of the skin crawling description of the Church and their agenda. If such extremist beliefs are still around God save us and this world. Taking into today's shooting of 50 people in Orlando's gay nightclub.

DEVIKA FERNANDO

Sneak Peek

Marie doesn’t believe in fairytales and needs no handsome prince to rescue her from misery – but everything changes when she falls in love with Crown Prince Christian of Taragonia. When his sister invites Marie to the palace, their lives collide and leave them both fighting their forbidden attraction.

Prince Christian has no place in his life for love or for a woman who doesn’t fit into the royal scheme of things. But vivacious Marie steals his heart and puts all he has lived for at stake. When the media gets wind of their affair, he has to make a difficult decision.

Will the unlikely couple have a chance at a happy ending?

About the Author

Almost as soon as Devika Fernando could write, she imagined stories and poems. After finishing her education in Germany and returning to her roots in Sri Lanka, she got a chance to turn her passion into her profession. Having lived in Germany and in Sri Lanka with her husband has made her experience the best (and the worst) of two totally different worlds – something that influences her writing. Her trademark are sweet, yet deeply emotional romance stories where the characters actually fall in love instead of merely falling in lust. She draws inspiration from everyone and everything in life. Besides being a romance novel author, she works as a self-employed German web content writer, as a translator, and as a faithful servant to all the cats, dogs, fish and birds in her home. What she loves most about being an author is the chance to create new worlds and send her protagonists on a journey full of ups and downs that will leave them changed. When she’s not writing, she’s reading or thinking about writing.

Excerpt from the book

Marie blinked some more, her feet automatically carrying her close. “What…what are you doing here?” Belatedly, she curtsied and added a weak “Your Highness”, remembering that they were not alone.

His smile widened. For a moment, he seemed to be drinking her in, his gaze roving appreciatively over her body clad turquoise capris and a white polo shirt. She felt his gaze like a physical caress, driving her out of her mind, increasing the heat.

“This is my family’s property. Surely I have a right to be here,” he joked mildly. For a moment, it looked like he wanted to touch her, but his hand fell back down to his side, clenching into a fist once.

“Yes,” she replied, still dazed. “But you’re a crown prince, not a winemaker.”

He laughed, and the sound traveled straight to her heart. “That is correct, but I do know a thing or two about wine. My duties encompass everything concerned with my kingdom.”

She nodded. Of course. And wasn’t that what made him the perfect regent? His interest in anything and everything, his willingness to learn and his readiness to get his hands dirty?

He ushered her into the building, her entourage trailing behind and exchanging looks.

“I came here this morning with the dignitaries from England and Germany to give them a private tour.” Christian raked his hands through his hair, as if the time spent with them hadn’t exactly been fun. “My sister told me you’d end up here sooner or later, otherwise I’d have traveled through the region, visiting some other vineyards and villages.”

Marie swallowed. So he’d stayed behind because of her. She felt thrilled and anxious at the same time. As keen as she was on every minute spent with him, this would lead nowhere and should not even get a chance to bloom. Why nurture something that was doomed to be cut off at the stem before it could blossom?

Are you ready?????

Book Review: More than Just Desire by Summerita Rhayne

Good day people !

Bollywood Diva plans a comeback...Will the man she ditched give up his need for revenge?

Like we mentioned here is the review for More than Just Desire by Summerita Rhayne. The Book Tour is now going on at The Book Club.
Get the scoop of the story at: Book Blitz: More than Just Desire by Summerita Rhayne

The Story:
Piya, the top most actress of Bollywood has comeback after 3 years to reclaim her title. The reason for her staying away from the limelight and attention she loves, is her marriage to the Director Arfaaz Khan and what she left in her wake when she just fled the scene she created. Arfaaz is a man of atmost patience but Piya can try even a saint. He wants his revenge as Piya has destroyed his pride, made a farce of their marriage. Piya wants to climb to stardom before she is labelled a yesteryear actress, is desperate and will go to any length but only when its in his favor. Her first plan of action is to scrap her past by getting a divorce. How does divorce, revenge, atonement figure for both Piya and Arfaaz along with combating the sizzling attraction between them they both are not averse to?

What I liked:
This is a quick read, fast page turner story. The sizzling sensuous scenes help in that :)
The characters are real. You can picture Piya, her barely-there dresses, antics that drive Arfaaz up the wall. Arfaaz and his perfection, the self-made man, his loathing for the man he is unfortunate to call Father, his directorial scenes.
Location descriptions. Apt description of Bollywood, its paparazzi, the gossips, back stabbing, the derby,... Very detailed research on that by Summerita.

What I wanted more:
Arfaaz to knock some more sense and maturity into Piya.
The father character was irritating but guess it was added to show Arfaaz and his past.
The steamy scene descriptions were a little too repetative. You can find all the synonyms of hot & red in these pages :D

Summerita is an ace author in the Historical romance genre too. Check out all her books.
